Flamescon 2011

Well, Flamescon is all of a day away, and my Guards Rifles from the 5th are rearing to go!

 The list is more or less the same as what I took to Conquest, with a few minor changes.

Anti Tank Platoon- 4 6pdr guns with Lloyd Carriers

Heavy Mortar Platoon- 2 4.2" Heavy Mortars, Lloyd Carriers

Guards Armoured Platoon- 2 Sherman V, 2 Sherman VC (Firefly) Tanks, one with a .50cal AA

Self Propelled Anti Tank- 4 M10c Achillies

Armoured Car Patrol- 2 Daimler 1, 2 Daimler Dingo

Objectives

So, thats the army! I thought I would try to see what a few close ups looked like on the different elements, I am pretty happy with how they look overall really, they are certainly a cohesive force if nothing else!

As for the tournament, well... I am not sure what to expect. I am guessing an excess of tank armies, with a smattering of tough infantry companies. I know that Bob and Nick will be there, with their super tough infantry armies, so I really hope I dont have to face them (again)!

Will have an update for you Monday, here is hoping the dice are on my side. Failing that, brew more tea!

Conquest and excuses

Well, you may have noticed a lack in blog posts of late. It pains me to say it but I have been struck down by that terrible curse- Real Life. It has been impeding my wargaming, sapping my time and generally preventing me from doing anything.

But, some occasions stir me from lethargy. Today marks the anniversary of the famous charge at Baklava- the Charge of the Light Brigade. Where poor orders and gallant men collided to be forever immortalized in verse.

With that in mind, Conquest is this weekend.

I am running British Guards (the ones from the Snow Challenge) and dream of being a better general than the officers in the Crimea.

Some Huns, Some Yanks and a Limey or two

Well, the painting over the last couple of days has gone well. Or more, the painting yesterday went very well, to make up for the fact that I was going to get very little done today! Might get a little more done before hockey training, but it is unlikely!

So, what did I get done? How about half a unit of KGL?

So there is 8 done, plus the skirmisher (he is hiding on the left); so 9 out of 17 germans completed! I have developed a pretty good system for painting my British now; the only change that I needed to sort out with these guys was to find a good way of painting the grey trousers (coldstreamers have white if you can't remember)

So, not only did I manage to finish off half of the KGL; the Coldstreamers are also completed...

But wait, there is more! I got sick of painting red; so I painted up two skirmisher stands for the army, these represent the 60th Rifles (Royal Americans). I opted for these over the (far more popular) 95th rifles because the Royal Americans fought alot with the Guards; plus they have some sweet red cuffs!

I still don't really have a handle on the "painting faces" aspect of 28mm modelling; but I guess I have plenty more models to practice on! Overall, at this point I am pretty happy with how my guys look. Quality basing will bump them up as a force, and as of this morning I have a pretty good way to get 50mm bases I think, so watch this space, there might actually be some based troops sometime!

Also, the count for 28mm figures complelty painted so far this project? 36 so far....

Coldstream Guards update

Painting has been going pretty well so far, I have finished 3/4 of my Coldstreamers; hopefully will get the last six done tommorow! No clue yet about what I will do with the bases, I need to sort myself out some Plasticard, then I have no idea what I will put on top of it. Ideally, I think I will try to base my guys for Waterloo (typical I know), so perhaps a muddy ground with a rough smattering of grass tufts? Not sure, we will see! I can't do anything with it until I get myself the bases themselves, which will be probably Monday of next week.

Here is a zoomed out shot of the whole lot, the back rank are just black at the moment, freshly sprayed this morning!

 

This is the unit's Sergant. One thing that entertains me is that upon recieving the rank of Sergant, they have promptly lost their musket to be replaced with a pike- sure you might stab a cavalryman, but surely you would want to keep the gun? Although, the stories of musket fire are less than complimentary to it's effect or accuracy, so maybe the pike would be good!

And finally the skirmish base for the unit. I will use them to represent the units with Skirmish value (plus they will look cool). As you can see he is already based on a coin (not stuck to the queen mind you) so it is likely he will be the first figure to be totally finished- likely as a test base!

So what is next? Finish those last six Coldstreamers, then I think I will make one of my small units of infantry. I will save my artillery and Highlanders until last (Artillery is a reward, and I am scared of the tartan!).
